Dianne S.P. Cermak
New
England artist Dianne Sargent-Pollock Cermak returned to painting
after a three decade hiatus, following a trip to the remote Outer Hebrides
islands off the northwest coast of Scotland. Her long dormant wish to
look at -- and to paint -- our surroundings for what they are, not just
as backdrops for human figures, was awakened by the island's shimmering
contrasts between stout, tidy, coastal cottages and the wild, windswept
land on which they were anchored.
Since then her prize-winning work in transparent watercolor has focused on three
types of images: - Subtly hued landscapes of northern islands and highlands,
- Monochromatic studies of structures and their elements, and - Portraits
of ancient standing stones and old stone walls. For each of these she
uses a constrained palette: No more than four pigments for the landscapes,
to achieve an intensely harmonious underlying sense of vibration, and
one pigment only to heighten the drama and narrow the focus of the
architectural works and the stones.
Her
work has been called "potent
and nuanced," "spectacular" and "intimate," and has brought increasing
critical acclaim for its "exquisite, beautifully rendered views." It
has been shown in juried exhibitions from coast to coast as well as
prominent art festivals and prestigious galleries. In 2003 the Society
for the Preservation of New England Antiquities sponsored her solo
show of monochromatic paintings of New England’s
historic buildings. Her work is represented on Cape Cod by the Left Bank Gallery
and on the North Shore by the Erlich Gallery.
